Great Progress for SCS in 2024-5 Academic Year!

1. The eighth annual conference of the Society of Catholic Scientists (SCS2025) was held at Catholic University of America on June 6-8 and was a great success.  150 people attended, including 35 student members of SCS.  Those figures represent increases from last year of 25% and 30% respectively.  You can read about at Past Conferences on this website, or HERE.

The videos  of all the talks of the conference will be put up on this website and on the SCS YouTube channel over a period of weeks starting in late June. Aside from the fact that the talks are quite interesting and well worth watching, you can help SCS become more visible by viewing these videos and telling others about them.

A special guest star at the conference was Ross Douthat, a columnist for the New York Times, who gave the after-dinner talk on the opening evening. Mr. Douthat book “Believe: Why Everyone Should Be Religious” was published in February 2025 and includes some discussion of science-faith topics.

The theme of the conference was “Critical Issues at the Intersection of Science and Faith.” The talks included “Does Mathematics Lead to God?”, “The Philosophy and Theology of Human Origins”, “The Science of Human Origins”, “Neanderthal Personhood?”, “Free Will, Aquinas, and the Brain”, and “What the James Webb Space Telescope Has Discovered and What It Means.” There was a talk presenting a scientific analysis of some Eucharistic miracles; one on Near Death Experiences, and others on a variety of other interesting and important topics. The conference received excellent coverage by the Catholic News Agency. See HERE and HERE and HERE.

2. The fifth St. Albert Initiative on Science and the Catholic Faith (SAI2025) was held on March 6, 2025, at Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY. It broke all records, with 475 high school students, teachers, and parents attending.  The sixth St. Albert Initiative will be held on Friday, March 13, 2026, in San Francisco, CA.

3. The third annual conference of the Spanish Chapter of SCS (Sociedad Científicos Católicos de España) was held in Avila from Thursday, September 19 to Saturday, September 21. There were talks on a wide variety of topics where science, philosophy, and theology meet. There were also two panel discussions, and other events.  VIDEOS of the conference talks (which are in Spanish, except for a talk by the SCS President) can be viewed HERE.

4. SCS held its second annual fund-raising drive in the Fall of 2024 and exceeded the previous year’s totals by 50%. The fund drive SCS raised $70K (including matching funds from a large donor) and SCS raised another $60K from other donors.  This is on top of dues income.

5. SCS has 31 College Chapters formed or in the process of formation.  In the 2024-5 academic year they held about 50 events, which drew a total of about 3,000 attendees.

6.  In the 2024-5 academic year, another seven articles were posted on the SCS website.  The total number of articles is now up to 46.

7.  The total number of scientists and science students who have joined SCS now stands at over 2,600.
